Benefits of Having a Bookkeeping Service

With the advent of so called “Accounting Programs” many business people are doing their own day to day bookkeeping from their own office and on their own computer. If one remembers these programs are only tools and that a good background in bookkeeping is still very important, this arrangement works quite well. Some of the criteria to follow in deciding to do your own bookkeeping or not includes:

• The size and complexity of your business
• Your own experience and knowledge of bookkeeping
• The amount of time you have to spend on this activity
• Other matters, such as the wishes of partners, shareholders, etc.

If you decide to attempt your own bookkeeping, you must decide between a manual or computerized system. A manual system, although initially less expensive, requires more time and expertise to use. There are many computerized programs out there. Obviously, an outside bookkeeping service eliminates the need for capital expenditure for equipment or programs (unless you are doing some of the work such as invoicing), eliminates the need for you to invest time in this area and should ensure the books are adequate (which should lower your year end costs). However, make sure the service you engage has been around for awhile and that you can work with the bookkeeper. If in doubt, ask for references.
